How Much Dry Ice for a Freezer?

A widely cited USDA figure is that 50 lbs of dry ice can keep a full 18 cubic foot freezer cold for about two days. Scale up or down for size, fullness and outage length.

Fullness matters

A full freezer holds cold much better than a half-empty one.

Use the calculator

The power outage calculator gives a planning range for your freezer size and outage length.

Dry ice releases carbon dioxide gas and requires proper ventilation. Handle only with insulated gloves, and never seal it in an airtight container.
