Dry Ice Basics

Why Does Dry Ice Disappear?

Dry ice disappears because it sublimates — it changes straight from a solid to carbon dioxide gas as it absorbs heat from its surroundings.

Sublimation explained

Anything warmer than -109.3°F transfers heat into the dry ice. That heat converts the surface into gas. Warmer surroundings, more air movement and smaller pieces all speed this up.

Where the gas goes

The CO₂ gas spreads into the surrounding air. That's why ventilation matters and why dry ice must never be sealed in an airtight container.

Dry ice releases carbon dioxide gas and requires proper ventilation. Handle only with insulated gloves, and never seal it in an airtight container.
