Dry Ice Basics

How Long Does Dry Ice Last?

In a good insulated cooler, dry ice commonly sublimates about 5–10 lbs every 24 hours. How long your supply lasts depends on the amount, container insulation, air temperature, and how often the lid is opened.

What affects duration

Quantity (more ice lasts longer), insulation (thick-walled coolers slow loss), empty space (air gaps speed it up), outside temperature, and how often the container is opened.

In open air

Unprotected dry ice disappears much faster than in a cooler. Keep it in an insulated container until you use it.

Planning tip

Use the duration calculator for a planning range, then add a buffer. Estimates are never guarantees.

FAQ

Does dry ice last longer in a freezer?
Not usefully. A home freezer is much warmer than dry ice, and the cold can make the thermostat shut the freezer off. An insulated cooler is the better choice.
Does dry ice melt?
No — it sublimates, turning directly from solid into CO₂ gas.

Dry ice releases carbon dioxide gas and requires proper ventilation. Handle only with insulated gloves, and never seal it in an airtight container.
